David Canfield has spent the last decade-plus staffed at publications including Vanity Fair, The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly, Vulture, and IndieWire. He has also written book criticism and profiles for The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and more. In 2020, Poets & Writers called him “one of the brightest and smartest talents in the literary industry,” and his writing has gone on to receive nominations from the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, the GLAAD Media Awards, the Los Angeles Press Club, and more.

David is currently a Senior Entertainment Writer at The Hollywood Reporter, where he’s written cover stories on such A-list subjects as Ryan Coogler and Callum Turner, and reported out in-depth features on some of the most controversial films of the year, including Luca Guadagnino’s Sam Altman biopic Artificial and Dave Green’s subversive Looney Tunes riff Coyote vs. Acme.

During his time as Correspondent at Vanity Fair, David wrote an archive-driven narrative history of the relationship between Hollywood icons Cary Grant and Randolph Scott, which was one of VF’s most-read stories of 2024, and a sprawling report from his alma mater, New College of Florida, that generated national media coverage as the school was thrust into the culture wars. He also wrote VF cover stories on Cate Blanchett and Scarlett Johansson, and retrospectives on queer literary-cinematic classics including The Talented Mr. Ripley and Brokeback Mountain.

David served as both film and books editor during his time at Entertainment Weekly, spearheading weekly book review columns and Oscar-season coverage. His cover subjects included Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, and Bowen Yang; he also profiled authors including Colson Whitehead, Sally Rooney, Tomi Adeyemi, and Leslie Jamison.

David also regularly moderates panel events in Los Angeles for the Academy, SAG-AFTRA Foundation, and more. He was born in Los Angeles, where he currently resides with his husband and their dog, Keats.
